Sidmonton Court

Sidmonton Court is the dream English estate, with flint church tethered on the spreading lawn, nestled beneath the rearing heights of Watership down. For two years the Bannermans designed romantic nooks and corners and introduced scented, sensual planting, such as the Sicilian sweet pea ‘Matucana’, to Andrew and Madeleine Lloyd Webber. A cherry orchard bounded by a lilac, philadelphus and wild rose bosco; apple orchard with gothic folly; a spring garden of spangle coloured tulips – acuminata and Abu Hassan – and crown imperials of all shades; a pre-Raphaelite fountain walk to the church with hellebores, sweetrocket and gold laced polyanthus; and round the church itself, instead of the busy-lizzies bedded out eternally by the diligent but municipal-natured head gardener, rampant old fashioned roses, under planted with rare snowdrops and hellebores.
