The summer following the year we finished the temples at Highgrove I fell into conversation with David, Marquess of Cholmondeley, whilst walking round the garden before dinner, and he seemed to like them. A couple of months later we received a letter on crunchy Houghton Hall paper, kindly inviting us to visit him. North Norfolk is full of fun and friends, wonderful architecture, light, bright, dry, seabound with open skies. We have spent years trying to go and live there. David had been re-making the walled garden with his head gardener Paul for some time, alongside the great restoration works he was doing in the house. It was all going swimmingly but he felt a little unsure about how to progress in the garden.
